Lucy, followed your lead and read these poems and others by Mr. Stern. Inspirational indeed! “What would I give” as a beginning phrase is seeding some ideas for sure. Thanks, Lucy

Thanks Mike. I really love it when I discover a new writer–someone who gets me stirred up! Glad that Gerald Stern has stirred up some ideas for YOU.

I do like this. Thank you, Lucy! I am loving my new writing consultant job at Union College. A dream come true, freedom and a chance to help older scholars. What a perfect fit. And part time!

    Love, D.

My poetry first began to breathe after I heard Jerry read … before that, it may have been well-formed but it was always stillborn. He reviewed my work and told me where it was I was writing and where just making noises.

Now, if I have something to say, and I begin with “What I took to be …” I have to bite my tongue and spit blood because I am only replaying “Blue Skies, White Breasts, Green Trees” in my mind, and I have to be very careful not to say “my hands were crazy” lest I be stealing from his “Box of Cigars.” And don’t get me started how, every December, I greet the juncos with “Little Did the Junco Know!”

More than my mentor, Jerry was a mensch who taught me how to see by telling us how he kept a pear in his pocket and cut it so thin he held it to the light to see the rose.

      Dear Joe,
Thanks so much for your insights into Gerald Stern not only as poet, but as a person. And sharing your experiences in your mentee/mentee relationship. What a gift that must have been–him inspiring you to make your own poetry come alive. And that great detail about his keeping a pear in his pocket. Thank you, thank you.
